Will Critical Illness Cover Be A Lifeline In Your Condition?

Will Critical Illness Cover Be A Lifeline In Your Condition?

Few of us are insured against serious illness even though it may strike at anytime. Unum Provident, the income protection provider, has carried out research that reveals only 4.2 per cent of the country's work force have critical illness cover, even though they will receive a lump sum if they have a heart attack, stroke or suffer from cancer.

17 per cent of people consider the cover to be too dear, the survey reveals, which explains the low take up.

Potential customers are also confused by the wording of policies and the difference between permanent health insurance and critical illness cover.

A working party formed by the Association of British Insurers, is currently reviewing the wording of policies. The situation could become even more confusing if the working party decides to reduce the number of conditions defined as a critical illness.

UnNum Provident have launched a new product called Elixia 123, which it claims cuts the cost of critical illness cover by around 30 per cent and on occasions by as much as 50 per cent.

This will be achieved by letting customers select the illness for which they require cover. There are three categories of risk. Category 1. Strokes, invasive cancer and heart attacks. The policy will only pay out if the condition leads to major life style changes or is life threatening.

Category 2. Conditions that do not have so much impact on life expectancy but do dramatically affect life style. Motor neurone disease, blindness and Alzheimer's are included in this category.

Category 3. Conditions that are traumatic but have little effect on life expectancy. Life style changes may be involved. This category covers strokes and minor heart attacks, open heart surgery and less serious types of cancer.

You choose a combination of categories and your premium is calculated accordingly. If you can?t afford all of the categories you might only select category 1 to cover you for life threatening events. You would then receive a 100 per cent pay out if you are diagnosed with a category 1 event and nothing under categories 2 and 3.

Perhaps you are more concerned about long term disability, in which case you might opt for a full payment under category 2 and a lower percentage for 1 and 3. Customers who want comprehensive cover can choose the full 100 per cent benefit no matter which category their illness is in.

Many people may not understand enough about critical illness to choose between the three levels of cover. This is certainly the view of Donna Bradshaw of independent financial advisers Fiona Price and Partners. She thinks letting customers choose maybe dangerous as there is a lot of jargon in an insurance policy and the medical terms are difficult to understand. She advises clients to opt for the most comprehensive cover as one doesn?t know what the future holds. Choose a lump sum payment equivalent to your mortgage is her advice.

Critical illness cover is not that expensive so it is advisable to opt for a comprehensive policy, which will give you peace of mind.

Nye Jones, the distribution development manager at PPP, is concerned about how the terms are defined. He emphasise that consumers must understand exactly what they are purchasing. For example, when is an illness defined as major? The first and the third categories need clarification before taking cover as there is not much difference between them in his view. Problems can occur later if the consumer has not fully understood the terms of the policy when they sign, says Nye Jones.

Life Insurance ? Medical History Increases The Cost For 66% Of Applicants

Lucky applicants for life insurance can be insured within 48 hours and at the premium quoted - but 2 in 3 applicants are faced with delays plus the prospect of having their premium loaded.

So who are the lucky ones? Basically, you'll have to be as fit as a flea with no family history of serious illness, under 45, in an office type job and probably applying for less than ?250,000 cover. For everyone else there is going to be some hassle.

When an insurer provides an initial quote for life insurance, all they know is your age, sex and smoking status. They use these details to make an initial prediction of how long you are likely to live and on that basis they give you an initial quotation. They call it their 'standard Terms?.

If you want to progress your application you'll have a multi-page application to complete. This isn't as daunting as it may seem, as most online operators take your details over the phone and send you a copy of the completed application for you to check over. But the questions are extensive and if you miss out anything that later turns out to be significant, your insurance may well be invalidated. So be warned and take care!

The insurers use your application details to look out for anything that signals current or future concerns about your health or life style. Besides the obvious questions that reveal health problems, they also evaluate your weight, alcohol and nicotine intake, and any potentially inherited health problems. So if your father died of a heart attack or mother died from breast cancer, they'll be concerned.

Then there's your life style. If you're in a type of job where accidents do happen, construction jobs are a good example, or you are involved in any form of dangerous sport or flying, your premium is in line for loading. They'll even want to know whether you regularly travel to countries that are known to represent health risks for visitors. And whilst the law doesn't allow discrimination against same sex relationships, the insurance companies will almost always insist on a medical for these applicants.

Insurers freely admit that the number of questions they ask is increasing. They claim it's to reduce the number of claims they refuse. Whilst that may be partly true, the trend has also coincided with an increase in the proportion of applicants who are seeing their premiums loaded. Some years ago it was nearer 40% - today's for some insurers the level is virtually 66%.

How much extra might you be asked to pay? That's a bit like how long is a piece of string. But to give you a feel, a woman aged 40 receiving medical treatment for post-natal depression was recently faced with a 50% loading on an initial quotation of ?7.60. A woman whose mother had breast cancer similarly faced a 50 % loading. Seriously overweight people can also expect loadings of 50% to 100% or even refusal.

Faced with a loading what can you do? It's important to appreciate that the insurance companies giving the cheapest initial quote are also likely to have particularly choosey medical criteria. That's how they keep their quoted prices low. So if you're faced with a loading, the best advice is shop around, Try one of the more expensive providers like Friends Provident who are sometimes a bit more lenient.

Whilst this may sound overly complicated, remember that over the years, an extra ?10 a month on a 25 year policy represents ?3,000 of your hard earned money. If you don't have the experience or time to do this, and after few of us do, speak to an online life insurance broker.

Competition is high on the Internet and online brokers will normally reduce your premium by cutting their commission. Their systems are also well versed in finding alternative providers to alleviate loading problems. So keep things simple. Let your keyboard fingers do the walking and let the online broker do all the hard work!

Arizona Auto Insurance Quote - How To Get The Best Rate

Arizona Auto Insurance Quote - How To Get The Best Rate

Arizona auto insurance rates can be absolutely astronomical. I should know. I live there. But there are ways to get a cheap Arizona auto insurance quote. Here's how ...

Arizona Auto Insurance Requirements

In order to license your car in the state of Arizona you're only required to have liability insurance.

Liability Insurance

Liability insurance pays for property damage and physical injury claims made against you from an accident that's your fault.

The minimum bodily injury liability coverage you must carry in Arizona is $15,000 per person with a $30,000 maximum per accident. The minimum property damage coverage is $10,000.

If you don't have a lot of assets to lose from a lawsuit, this minimum coverage, expressed as 15/30/10, may be all you need. But if you do have a lot of assets, you should get enough coverage to protect yourself from personal injury lawsuits.

Personal Injury Protection

Personal injury protection (PIP) pays for reasonable and necessary medical expenses for you and your passengers when you're involved in an accident. Though the sate of Arizona does not require that you carry this coverage, it's a good idea to carry at least the minimum coverage, especially if you don't have medical insurance.

Uninsured Motorist Protection

This pays you and your passenger's medical expenses and property damage expenses caused by an uninsured driver, an underinsured driver, or a hit-and-run driver. I highly recommend you purchase this protection because one-quarter of the residents in Arizona are driving without auto insurance.

Comprehensive and Collision Insurance

Comprehensive insurance pays for damages to you car from theft, fire, vandalism, hail, etc. Collision insurance pays for damages to your car when you're involved an accident no matter who was at fault.

To save money on comprehensive and collision insurance get the highest deductible (what you pay before your insurance kicks in) you can afford to pay.

How to Get the Best Rate

Getting the best auto insurance rate in Arizona is simply a matter of comparison shopping at a insurance comparison website. In a matter of minutes you can get quotes from a number of companies and choose the cheapest rate. Some Arizonans have saved as much as $1,000 on their insurance by comparison shopping.

Home Owner Loans ? What Are The Benefits And Costs?

Home Owner Loans ? What Are The Benefits And Costs?

There are plenty of reasons to borrow a bit of extra cash. From paying for home improvements and extensions, buying a new car, starting a business or going on holiday, people are becoming more and more willing to borrow the money they need to take on larger projects. By and large the credit industry is more than willing to oblige, with fierce competition in the market driving interest rates and loan terms lower and lower. This means that for most people, there is an array of potential sources for borrowing money. They can opt for Credit Cards, bank overdraft, an unsecured personal loan, or a home owner loan, all of which are fighting tooth and nail to get YOUR business, YOUR custom and YOUR money!

Before you apply you should, as any financial advisor would do, shop around for the best loan offer available. Even those applicants with bad credit there are a whole host of companies who are fighting to get your business, so do not give it away lightly. Always, compare deals that are on offer, get the companies to give you quotations in writing and use these to barter discounts from other loan providers.

For those people with a good Credit rating you will really be spoiled for choice. There is a plethora of companies offering cheap rates, discounted rates, promotional benefits and more to attract you and your loan. Again, the main point is to be aware of this and shop around for the best deal and negotiate where you see fit. In these situations I always remember a phrase my Mom used with me when I was a child, ? If you don?t ask you don?t get?, this is just as true when shopping for any product, financial or not.

There are a number of clear advantages to choosing the home owner loan, particularly if the sum involved is large, and you wish to repay it over a number of years. By opting for a home owner loan, you will generally be able to borrow more money than with any other form of credit, and the terms will be better than for the others. The reason for this is that you are allowing the lender to secure the value of the loan against your home. This provides them with an almost fail proof guarantee that the loan will be repaid, and accordingly drastically reduces the risks to them in making the loan.

There are risks however involved in securing credit over your home. You should consider these carefully before ever agreeing to sign up for a home owner loan. Granting security gives the lender a direct right over your home. If for any reason you become unable to keep up with your repayments, then the lender will have a right to take possession of the house and sell it in satisfaction of the debt. So if you feel there is a chance that you will be unable to continue making your repayments, then you should know that you will be at risk of losing your home. If you have family or other obligations that perhaps this is a risk that you cannot afford to take.

You may also want to think twice if you are thinking of borrowing for a short term reason. For example, if you want to go on holiday, is it really wise to put this loan on your home? The holiday will be over in two weeks and you'll still be paying for it fifteen years later!

That said, for most people, home owner loans do provide the cheapest and most attractive source of borrowing for larger loans.

5 Ways To Cut Costs Around The Home

5 Ways To Cut Costs Around The Home

The world is in an economic crunch and more people than ever are looking for ways to save money. Every penny matters and yet many people do not realize that within their own home there are probably a number of things they can do today to save money. Cutting costs does not mean giving up on the things you love, want, and need. It is important to look at the way you are living and then find ways to significantly reduce your investment. Chances are good some of these items below can be done right now and add money to your pockets.

#1: Appliance Management

One of the biggest draws of money within the home is the use of appliances. Do you hear the television in the background? Do you have fans running or perhaps even have the toaster plugged in? Most people realize the importance of turning off lights in the home, but what about unplugging. You may not realize it but when appliances and other devices are left plugged into an electrical socket, they draw electricity. Therefore, by not only turning them off, but also unplugging them, you will be saving money.

How much can you save from just managing your appliances better? You could decrease your electric bill by as much as 25 percent in some instances. Big culprits are televisions, computers, and larger counter top appliances.

#2: Adjust The Temperature

Another big way to save money is to adjust the thermostat in your home. Did you know that you could reduce your heating and cool bills by as much as 20 percent by simply decreasing your heating temperature by two notches and by increasing your air conditioning temperature by two points? Do you feel the difference between 66 degrees and 68 in the summer, sometimes, but not by much. In the winter, what would the different between 64 degrees and 66? It may mean wearing an extra layer of clothing, but for a savings of 20 percent, it may be worthwhile.

#3: Know The Grocery Bill

While other expenses like your mortgage and utilities may be difficult to reduce, you may find it far easier to reduce your grocery bill. Perhaps you think that you are already doing so? Here are a few ways to reduce this large cost.

* Shop the outside aisles of the grocery store instead of the center. You get more healthy foods and less prepackaged products that cost far more.

* Consider store brands. The quality of store brands has risen in recent years. You may not notice the taste difference but you will notice the difference in the lower bill.

* Do shop the sales, but that is it. When something is on sale, this loss leader is a good bet. Stock up. But, avoid impulse buying during these trips. It could cost you. Moreover, use coupons on top of sale prices to pay half the price or less for the item.

#4: Bundle Services

Sometimes you can save a good deal of money by simply bundling your services. For example, your local cable provider may be running a special that allows you to get your Internet, cable service, and phone service for a fraction of the cost you are currently paying. Find out what special offers are available. Also, talk to your insurance agent and ask for discounts. By having multiple products through one provider, you may save considerably.

#5: Track Spending

Regardless of if the purchase is for the home or if it is for personal use, you should track what you are spending. While most people hate this word "budget" it is one of the best ways to know where your money is going and to help to reduce costs.

Go ahead and try out some of these methods. Chances are good you do not realize just how much money is going out the window in these areas.

Discount Auto Insurance By Zip Code

Discount Auto Insurance By Zip Code

Does where you live impact your auto insurance premiums? Getting a clear understanding of its effect will help you make better decisions when buying your next house: You will see how saving a few hundred on a new home might actually cost you thousands in auto insurance costs over the course of a few years.

Here are a few of the reasons.

Your new home's location will largely determine your automobile mileage in a number of ways. If you live far from the places you frequently go to you will accumulate higher mileage. Take your place of employment for example: If your home is 20 miles from your place of employment and you drive there five days a week, you'll accumulate four times as much mileage as your neighbor whose office is just 5 miles away.

Is there access to standard public transit where you are moving to? Using public transit will definitely help you lower down your auto insurance rate.

Does your place of residence have a high crime rate? This will determine your auto insurance rates to a high extent. Your area's crime rate affects your risk of vandalism and theft.

If you are thinking of moving to new home in a different area, take some time out to do these calculate. The small amount of money you save on your new house in one neighborhood might be totally canceled out by the rate hike you incurred on your new auto insurance premium.

Also, take some time to do thorough comparison shopping to locate insurers who offer better rates for the area you are moving to. Different insurance company's rates may vary drastically.

Remember when you're considering a new place to live; get multiple auto insurance quotes to compare car insurance for the different zip codes you are interested in. If a zip code adds $400 to your yearly auto insurance costs, you'll pay an extra $8,000 over the course of 20 years!

Travel Insurance ? Do I Need Insurance For A Holiday In The Uk?

Last week my wife and I booked a two centre holiday on the Scottish Isles. Seven days on Skye and then a ferry over to Steornabhagh for a further seven days on the Isle of Lewis. Wonderful scenery, plenty of walks and masses of peace and quiet.

You could have blown me over when my local travel agent assumed that I wanted travel insurance for an additional ?27.50. Not on your Nellie the Lock Ness monster, I thought. Who needs travel insurance for a holiday in Britain? The National Health Service is free and in an emergency, my son could drive up and bring us home.

Later in the relaxing setting of my sitting room I got to thinking '?..

Holiday misfortunes don't only happen abroad. So with my pessimistic hat on, I made a note of the risks:

Some rotter might steal our luggage

Last week I bought an all singing and dancing digital camera especially for the trip. Got it on the Internet. I might lose it whilst away.

If either of us were hospitalised we wouldn't want to be marooned on Skye. We'd want to transfer to our local hospital in Warwickshire.

My wife's parents are getting on. God forbid, but I'd have to cancel the holiday if something happened to them just before we're due to go.

One of us could be taken ill before we depart and we'd be forced to cancel. As the ferries and the hotels were non-cancellable, we'd lose everything we'd paid.

There may be a major delay at the ferry going over to the Isle of Lewis. Besides the inconvenience, we have to arrange an extra overnight stay on Skye.

One of us might be called up for jury service.

Then it struck me. If I were holidaying in the Britain, my existing Home and Contents policy might cover me for loss of my camera or luggage. I dug out the policy document. Lucky I did. I was only insured for ?personal possessions? if they were listed and as I'd just bought my digital camera I hadn't got round to listing it as a valuable item on my policy.

Another aspect struck me. I'd lose my no claims discount if I made a holiday related claim on my Home & Contents policy. That wouldn't be a good idea. I've got a ten year claims free record that policy and it still cost me ?310 a year. I jotted down a another note ? remember, when the policy comes up for renewal, see if I could get it cheaper on the Internet.

By now a travel policy at ?27.50 for was looking worthwhile after all.

Now my wife says I'm a bit of an old skin flint. So keep up the image! I know, get back online and check out the travel agents' policy at ?27.50. Is it competitive?

Not all the web sites I surfed could offer me a single trip travel policy for a holiday within the UK but within ten minutes I'd found what I wanted - and a saving of over ?10!

Time to study the small print to confirm I had the cover I wanted. Great, all the risks I had noted were covered. The insurer would even pay out ?30 if my ferry was delayed for up to 12 hours and then give me the option to cancel my trip to the Isle of Lewis and get my money back.

Now what wouldn't they pay for? I wasn't covered if my holiday was for less than two nights or my hotel was less than 25 miles away from home. I also had to meet the first ?30 of any claim. Seemed fair to me.

The decision was made. Simply type in my credit card details and I was insured in a CLICK.

Peace of mind restored!
