Although the number of Brits planning to spend their holidays in the UK this year is striving, travel insurers have stated that there has been no linking increase in the number of policies taken out for UK travel, prompting concerns that travellers are forgoing insurance because they think it is insignificant if they are staying in the country.
A travel insurance website stated that only 2% of travel quotes were sought via its portal for customers looking for UK cover.
Steve Williams, head of the insurance firm said: ?The number of UK insurance policies sold is dwarfed by that of European and worldwide policies, and in our experience fewer people shop around for UK cover.?
Williams added: ?But travel insurance should be seen as a vital part of any holiday you are planning, whether it be in the UK or further afield.?
Although British holidaymakers do not need travel cover to protect them during medical emergencies in the UK, it is advised in case of cancellations or curtailment, which could leave travellers with lost deposits , cancellation costs or reservation fees.
Travel issues
Travel studies have shown that the most common reasons for cancelling a holiday were jury service, family illness and redundancy. In 2008, more than 150 claims relating to holidays taken in Great Britain were made by its policyholders, with an average of ?1,074 being claimed for cancellations.
Hoburne Holiday Parks, which has a franchise of seven other parks, has witnessed more than a third in increase of bookings, but warned customers that any cancellations could affect their contract and advised customers to approach a broker authorised by the FSA for travel insurance.
More than five million Brits plan to cancel or reduce one or more of their insurance policies over the next year, with almost a quarter stating they would cancel or scale down their travel cover in an attempt to rescue their wallet.
John O'Roarke, managing director of an insurance firm however reminded people that: "Travel insurance is extremely important and compared to the cost of an average holiday, it is a very small expense that could save you tens of thousands and a lot of heartache in the long run.?
However, Williams urged customers to be careful, so they do not double up on insurance they already have. Items taken on holiday could already be covered by home insurance policies, while people with yearly global or European travel cover will automatically be covered for UK trips.
