Say "bah, Humbug!" To Holiday Debt

Say

Ah, the holiday season! Turkey and dressing, pumpkin pie, Santa hats, jingle bells, and lots and lots of eggnog make the season a delight. But all fun and reindeer games aside, you have to be careful to make sure you don?t wind up as poor as Tiny Tim! Americans can spend as much as $1,000 a year on gifts for family and friends. That is a big chunk of money that can hit you pretty hard come January, but only if you don?t plan ahead. There are some tips and tricks you can do to keep your holidays bright and debt-free this year.

Before the holidays arrive, do some careful plotting and planning. A few hours spent in preparation can mean less money spent on gifts. You don?t have to be Scrooge, you just have to be smart.

Decide how much you are willing to spend, and stick to it.

Pretend you are spending cash. How much can you afford out of pocket this month? If you cannot afford it right now, consider that you cannot afford it at all.

Budget non-gift and after-Christmas items too.

Remember to include other things you buy over the holidays--cards, stamps, candles, a tree, decorations, and food galore. Plus, plan ahead to save some money for next year by taking advantage of after-Christmas sales. It is all part of your holiday spending, so plan for it in your holiday budget.

Make a list of everyone you will be buying gifts for, and estimate how much you want to spend on each person.

Include the smaller gifts for teachers or your mailman. Include the price of cards and stamps, because Christmas cards count as gifts when it comes to your budget. Then, add it up and compare the total to your budgeted amount. Make the necessary adjustments. Your brother-in-law may only get socks this year.

Cut down your list.

This may sound harsh, but look closely at who you are buying gifts for. When saving money is an issue, it is ok not to give gifts to everyone you know.

Be creative.

Determine if maybe some people wouldn?t be happy with a nice card or maybe some home-baked cookies. Remember, the holidays aren?t about presents, but about good will towards man. Good will comes in many forms and does not always need wrapping paper. If you have a skill or a hobby, use it: needlework, knitting, art, poems. Burn a CD, make a photo album, or offer to plant their garden.

Carry your shopping list with you.

Take every opportunity to shop. Start early and try to get things before the rush, before highly sought, hard-to-find items go up in price, and before you can?t find what you need. This gives you a chance to comparison shop. It also takes away some of the stress and reduces your risk of overspending just for the sake of getting shopping over with.

If a store offers free gift-wrap, go for it!

It'll save you time and money on buying wrapping paper, tape, bows, and cards and struggling with it all yourself.

Have willpower.

Stick to your estimates and you won?t go over budget. ebay is a wonderful shopping tool if you remember to start early enough to account for shipping time. Find the right item, bid your budget price and leave it. If someone outbids you, don?t get into a bidding war, just bid on something else within your price range.

Increase your income for the season.

During the holidays there are lots of ways to make a little extra money. Many stores hire part-time workers for the holidays. Since it is a party season, babysitting is in high demand. Be imaginative. You could be the Official Gift Wrapper in your neighborhood and wraps gifts for friends and neighbors for a small fee.

Use your Credit Cards.

Yes! If you stick to your budget and only spend what you are able to pay for in the next 30 days, then yes, you CAN use Credit Cards. The key is to use them as you would cash. Using your credit card is not a way to buy things you can?t afford, it is a way to organize your spending and possibly get some rewards and discounts along the way.

Make the credit card companies compete for your business.

It may be the holidays, but you can dig in your heels and play hardball. Call your credit card bank and tell them you won?t be using their card for your holiday purchases unless they sweeten it up for you. You want a little sugar and spice to make using that card a better deal. You can ask for 0% interest, or double your gas points or flyer miles. Anything to make using your credit card more worthwhile. Banks will usually be willing to strike a deal with you, so long as you try. It can?t hurt to ask.

Use specialized Credit Cards, but carefully.

Many of the stores where you will be buying your holiday gifts offer their own Credit Cards. They tend to have ridiculously high interest rates. However, they may give you discounts of 10%, 15%, sometimes even 20%! So, you could actually go ahead and use a store credit card to make the purchases and get the discounts, since you are paying these off when the bill comes due the interest rates should not be a problem. If you do get into a pinch and can?t pay them off right away, then transfer your balance to your lower-rate credit card before any interest is added to the higher-rate one. You need to be on the ball with this trick, but it saves you money.

It is important to keep in mind that every new credit card you apply for will lower your credit score. So if you're saving up for a mortgage or a large loan, you'll want to avoid applying for additional credit.

Come the start of January, your main concern is going to be getting ready for the new year, and you won?t want post-holiday money troubles making things worse. The Ghost of Christmas Past starts visiting even before you put the tree in the trash. Be sure to have a Happy New Year by being money-wise from the start:

When you get your credit card bill, pay it in full right away.

Remember, you considered it just like using cash. Once it is spent, it is spent. You may consider prepaying the credit card company once you know how much you've spent. You don?t have to wait for the bill to come in. You know you owe it. So keep the money from burning a hole in your pocket by getting it out to the credit card company as soon as possible.

Hit the sales.

Remember that budget you made for after-Christmas items? Use it now. Wrapping paper, Christmas cards and decorations will be discounted as much as 75%.

Go back to your old budget.

he holidays were about spending and being generous and indulging in delights, but now it is time to go back to your money-saving ways. You just had lots of fun, and got lots of treats, so now return to buying only what is necessary.

Start planning for next year.

Help get over the post-Christmas let down by beginning to plan for the next one. One way to avoid a huge Christmas bill is to buy presents throughout the year. Whenever you see a present that ?would be perfect for so-and-so? or a great sale with good gift items, take advantage of the opportunity. The average consumer spent $672 in Christmas expenses for 2003. If you spread that out, and purchase a couple of $20 or $25 gifts every month, the bill doesn?t hurt quite as much. Plus, you'll avoid the Christmas rush.

Start a Christmas fund.

Those quarters, nickels and dimes make a great Christmas fund. For your everyday purchases, instead of paying with exact change, pay with bills. You'll be jingling by the end of the day, but you'll easily have a dollar or more in loose change in your pocket. A dollar a day in change is an extra $365 you'll have for Christmas Day.

Last January, when you were struggling with all your holiday debt and trying to get the mulled cider stains out of your carpet, you probably mumbled to yourself, ?Next year will be different!? It can be. A few hours spent planning, plotting, creating, and caring can save you lots of money come January, and can make 2008 start off happy and holiday-debt-free.

What You Should Know Before You Co-sign On A Loan

What You Should Know Before You Co-sign On A Loan

The want to help out our friends is something that we are all guilty of. It is a good thing, up to a point. At some point in your life there is a good chance that you will be asked by a good friend to co-sign a loan for them. Maybe they have had credit difficulties in the past, which will make getting a loan hard for them. Saying no to such a request can e awfully hard sometimes, after all the only thing they want from you is your signature on a little piece of paper right?

Wrong! This is a decision that you should think long and hard about. It could affect your life in a big way. You need to ask yourself why it is that your friend needs your help in the first place. If it is because they have poor credit, do you really want to take the chance that they will be responsible now? If you co-sign it is you who will be responsible for the loan if they bail. Your credit can be at risk here, affecting your ability to get a home loan, car loan, credit card and so forth for years to come.

Before you sign anything make sure that you understand the following:

Your responsibility

When you sign the contract you are promising that your friend will make all of their scheduled payments on time every month of every year. Are you sure that is something you want to risk your financial life on? Do you have the ability to pay the loan if they fail to do so?

What are the risks?

If your buddy needs someone to co-sign that means that they are considered high risk. If the lender, who is a professional thinks it is a risky move, what makes you think that you know better?

What about your credit report?

Doubtless your friend is asking you to co-sign because you have good credit, which is something you have always tried to keep up. If your friend does not meet their payment schedules and amounts it is your credit that will suffer.

The manner in which delinquent payments will be collected

The policies for the collection of such debts differ from state to state, so it is wise to check with your local legislation to see just how you will be affected. In some states the lender will not even attempt to get the money from your friend, they will go straight to you for it. This is because they feel you are the one that they can actually get it out of.

These are not the only things to be considered when deciding if you should co-sign for a loan. The amount of credit that you can get can even be affected because the money you signed for can count as debt owed by you.

If after thinking it over you decide that you do want to help your friend and co-sign for their loan be sure to at least take the following steps to protect yourself as much as possible.

When applying for the loan ask the lender to keep you informed of any late or missed payments on the part of your friend. This will help you to get control of any problems before they get too out of hand. And make sure to get copies for yourself of all loan documents. Keep these in a safe place at home where they are easy to find.

While it is always nice to help out a friend, you should not feel guilty if you decide against it in this type of case. The risk to you is enormous and if you plan on buying a house or a car in the future, you might want to think twice before saying yes.

Things To Keep In Mind About Credit Card Ownership

Owning a credit card is like owning a gun. Handle it responsibly and it will take care of you and save you from occasional tight situations. Misuse it and it can bring you to grave financial disaster.

To get the most out of your credit card, therefore, you need to have a full grasp of what credit card ownership entails. Keep your account in good credit standing and know what is expected of you to do this.

To keep card ownership simple and less expensive, it's best to maintain only one credit card. Maintaining one card means saving on yearly membership fees and allows the cardholder to maximize the rewards points he earns from frequent card usage.

Prior to actually getting the credit card, find out more about what it has to offer in terms of benefits, features, and services. Look into monthly finance charges, annual fees, late payment fees and the like to have an idea of how much it would cost to maintain the card.

What are the advantages of owning a credit card?

By owning a credit card and maintaining it responsibly, you will establish your credit worthiness. You will create a positive credit history for yourself that will tremendously improve your chances of getting loan approval to finance your studies, purchase a vehicle, open a bank account, or even buy a house. You also enjoy the added benefit of having access to stand-by funds in cases of extreme emergency. You eliminate the risks of carrying too much money on you when you need to shop for big-ticket items. More importantly, you enjoy a sense of personal freedom and independence.

Tips on proper maintenance of Credit Cards

?Know your payment due date. Always pay on time and avoid carrying balances over to the next month. Paying in full each month helps you avoid steep financial charges on unpaid balances.

?Make sure that all entries in your statement are correct. Fraudulent entries in your statement indicates someone has tampered with your records. Immediately notify the company once you see a strange entry on your statement.

?Beware of misleading introductory offers. When you are offered a card with a low monthly interest rate, make sure that this rate is on a permanent basis and not a promo rate that will double after the promo period has expired.

?Think first before making a large purchase. Problems arise when we make major purchases with our cards without checking whether we will be able to pay for these purchases when our statement arrives the following month. We need therefore to be aware of our cash flow situation.

All these said, next time you feel like taking the plunge and buying that expensive gadget you have long dreamed of, think hard. It's so easy to buy something using plastic money. Remember that, in a few days, you will be asked to dish out real cash to cover this purchase. Stay within budget.

Climbing Out Of Major Debt

Climbing Out Of Major Debt

Nobody wants to go into debt. Before things are getting worse and far out of hand, you should learn about some of these debt handling solutions.

First of all, you should know about basics. Basics are lower insurance deductibles for your homeowners, renters and vehicles policies where appropriate and save money. Don't take chances on bouncing checks; instead get covered with overdraft protection and pay about the same as what it would cost for one bounced check to cover our account for an entire year. Ask your banker about packaged account services. Many offer free savings and checking accounts with free overdraft protection and checks, free online bill paying and more. When you shop, check your receipts, even for groceries. Many times items ring up at incorrect prices. Sometimes store policy allows for no errors, meaning you get the items free if it wrings up wrong. So carry along a handheld calculator or pencil with small notepad to tally up your charges.

In case you have medical debt, the first thing healthcare offices try to do is get you to charge the bills or refinance your home, etc. Stop!!! Before you take such a drastic step, check with legal counsel. There are often other steps to take first. For example, notify the billing parties and tell them you need to apply for financial aid. Many have forms to complete, and although they may be lengthy, remember they're for free money to pay your bills. Reach out, take forms and fill them out. Then set up minimum payment arrangements for the remaining balances, even if it's just $10 a month for 30 years. Healthcare bills are not like credit card debt and do not need to be reported to the credit bureau in the same manner.

Also reach out with merchandise and return any recently purchased items that you can for a refund. Credit Cards and mail order companies generally allow you 30 days to inspect your purchase. Return any you can for refunds. If purchases are beyond the 30 days and for various reasons don't hold up to their end of the "bargain;" i.e. they broke already or never worked right to begin with, get on a letter writing campaign pronto. Write the place of purchase and copy the manufacturer, the distributor, the Better Business Bureau and your state Attorney General's Office. State the reasons our product is faulty and that you want a refund. It's often rewarding to get help with other entities like these. No need to go it alone!

The key is that you should take charge and get back to basics when debt is out of hand. Put some of these debt handling solutions into practice and make the most out of what you have.

The online option of comparing quotes also means that you will be able to go through each plan in detail on the insurance sites in order to assess both the quality of the coverage as well as the rates.

Different Types Of Healthcare Plans

Different Types Of Healthcare Plans

There is a lot said about health care these days. With costs rising and no end in sight there is a bigger need than ever for everyone to have the coverage of a health care plan. Health car plans are basically like insurance that helps you cover medical costs. Like any insurance they are sometimes difficult to understand.

There are many types of health care plans available. Each type breaks down into two basic groups: group or individual. Group plans are the least expensive option. They are provided through an employer. Individual plans are offered through private companies and can cost much more than group plans because there are no group discounts to the provider. Within each group there are a few different type of health care plans.

Fee for service plans are the most common and traditional forms of health care coverage. With a fee service the covered individual gets many choices of doctors and hospitals. The insurance provider pays for a portion of your costs while you pay a fee. You pay both a monthly fee for coverage and fees based on the care you receive. Many times there is a deductible that must be met before the insurance provider pays anything. Most plans also have a maximum amount you will pay out of pocket. Once this figure is reached your costs are covered 100%.

Health maintenance organizations or HMO's are another type of health care plan. HMO's charge a monthly fee. You are required to use certain doctors who are signed up with the HMO. You pay a fee for any costs you incur called a co-payment. The total costs of any medical care is negotiated between the doctor and the HMO so the costs are lower.

Preferred provider organizations or PPO's are a combination of the fee based plan and an HMO. There are limits on the doctors and hospitals you can choose, you make a co-payment for each service and you may have a deductible. You can, however, use a doctor that is not part of the PPO. You will still get coverage but you may end up paying a larger fee.

There are other forms of health care plans. The government offer two plans: Medicare and Medicaid. Medicare is a plan for people over age 65 or disabled. The coverage provided by Medicare often changes and can be confusing. There are different types of Medicaid. There is a free type and a fee based type. Medicaid is another government offered plan. It is based on income. With Medicaid all of your expenses are covered. New changes have made it so some care requires a very small fee. There are also variations in Medicaid. To find out information a person should contact their local government human services agency.

Health care plans can be very confusing. Talking with your provider will help ensure you completely understand how your plan works and what coverage is provided.

Advanta Business Credit Cards: A Solid Look

The credit card wars continue to heat up and that spells "good news" for consumers. Despite rising interest rates, many issuers are continuing with their popular 0% introductory APR plans, giving new card holders a great way to save money and pay off their debts. One issuer, Advanta, has thrown the gauntlet down and is now offering an extremely low APR on balances until the debt is paid off. Let's take a look at three Advanta offerings to find the one that has the best advantage for you and your wallet.

Advanta Platinum Business Card With Rewards

There just aren't too many cards out there offering 0% APR beyond the first 12 months of issuance. And why is that? Because, credit card issuers know that interest rates will continue to head up. Fortunately, Advanta is not letting interest rate trends dissuade them from making an important marketing decision: the

Advanta Platinum Business Card with Rewards extends the 0% APR period through 16 months, a rarity in the credit card business. What's more, as the name of the card implies, it comes with a rewards program too. Consumers can get 5% cash back on many purchases or use their points for travel rewards. For a $35 annual fee the card can be transformed into an airline miles accumulator.

Advanta Platinum Business Card

An alternative to the Business Card with Rewards is the Advanta Platinum Business Card. No, you don't get rewards with the card, but you do get a 12 month 0% APR and a beefy credit line of up to $50,000! This can be the perfect card for business people who must charge just about everything, but don't want to be restricted by a lower credit line.

Advanta Life-of-Balance Platinum Card

Perhaps one of the most unusual cards in the Advanta arsenal is the Advanta Life-of-Balance Platinum card. If you have balances to transfer, this card can be extremely beneficial as the 2.99% fee on balance transfers stays in effect until the card is paid off. In addition, the card pays you 6% cash back on many purchases or you can redeem your points for travel rewards. If you are concerned about identify theft or regular credit monitoring, you likely understand the importance of obtaining a copy of your free personal credit report. Neglecting to monitor your credit may prove damaging in the long run. It does not take long for a person to access your information and begin opening accounts in your name. For this matter, consumers are advised to obtain a 3 in 1 credit report every six months.

Benefits of a Credit Report

Aside from protecting yourself against identify theft, credit monitoring is essential for improving your Credit rating. Although lenders use credit reports to judge a loan applicant's creditworthiness, credit reports are also beneficial because they keep us informed of our credit standing. Thus, we can know our odds of obtaining a home loan, auto loan, etc.

How to Get a Copy of Your Credit Report

Getting a copy of your 3 in 1 credit report is simple. Furthermore, because reports are viewable online, there is no valid reason not to check your report at least once annually. Every city across the country has a local credit agency which will issue copies of your credit report from all three bureaus. However, if you prefer the convenience of the internet, there are various websites offering 3 in 1 reports for a small fee.

To obtain a copy of your personal reports, you must provide information such as name, address, social security number, etc. Once your information is verified, credit reports are either sent via email, or viewable from the website. Your entire credit history will show before your eyes.

Why Obtain Copies of a 3 in 1 Credit Report?

If you are hoping to improve your Credit rating, obtaining a 3 in 1 credit report should be the first step you take. This way, you know exactly what needs improving. The report will list all creditors, current balances, and account standing. Moreover, you should review your report for errors. If inaccuracies are present, contact the bureau and discuss clarifying the matter.

In addition, credit reports include a credit score. This 3 digit number carries a lot of weight. Low scores indicate bad credit, whereas high scores equal good credit. If the goal is to improve credit score, it may be wise to improve in certain areas. Requirements For Dipping Into Your State Health Insurance Pool

State health insurance is a branch of health insurance that is for high-risk individuals with chronic and/or pre-existing conditions. Most common diseases to see on this type of insurance are HIV, AIDS, kidney disease, obesity, and diabetes. This high-risk pool is designed to act as a safety net to offer some form of insurance to these people but for a hefty premium. This program has fewer participants due to the cost. This plan is not low-income friendly. Rates can be as much as double what the normal market value for health insurance is. The pool does tend to offer better benefits but is definitely geared to those people that truly afford insurance. So, most people who fall under this category and require this type of plan are likely to be uninsured due to not being able to afford a plan. This plan is last resort for persons with such illnesses that land them for emergency or hospital care frequently, and it that case pays for itself quickly. Some of the few persons who cannot afford this are lucky enough to have a spouse in the work place that is able to add them to their policy from their employer, these plans cannot discriminate due to chronic or long-term illnesses. The State Health Insurance Pool knows its rates are high, and claims so are medical costs for the chronically ill. They have to charge more to be able to get ahead and stay afloat.

Most risk pools are nonprofit associations ran by the state. Usually they do not use taxes to operate their business. Most persons requiring this type of service usually are filling up the gap in cost of what their normal plan won't cover or is a temporary pit stop till they can find a plan that accepts them at a lower cost. The people who qualify for this type of coverage must be a resident of the state they are applying in. Most states require you live there for at least six months and some up to one full year before reaching residency status. You also need one of several possible documents from other insurance companies. You will need proof of rejection from at least one company denying them benefits similar to the ones being asked for. You can use proof of insurance with a higher premium as well. You may also be eligible if you can show proof of insurance with a rider or rated policy. Any of the above mentioned could get you approved to apply for the risk pool in the state you reside in. A reciprocity agreement is when a person who is eligible for the plan and is currently on a similar plan, met the waiting period quota, and not used up the lifetime maximum benefits can still be eligible if they move to another state after they meet the residency requirement. Not all states, but most, have this agreement included into their plan.

There is a list of those who are not eligible in the high-risk pool besides non-residents. You are no longer eligible if you move to another state but if you have a reciprocity agreement, you can become eligible in the state you now reside after residency has been established. Most people who are eligible or receive Medicaid or Medicare are also not eligible. Many states do have a high-risk plan for Medicare eligible persons, but if you receive or could receive Medicaid than you don't qualify. If a person has terminated their coverage in another plan and less than 132 months have passed they are not eligible for the pool till that time is up. Those who have used their maximum lifetime benefits for their plan are also not qualifying. Inmates of a public institution are also not eligible for the risk pool. Other specific exclusions can include state decided specific diseases or medical conditions that they just don't want to cover. An enrollment cap may also be in affect so only a specific amount of persons may be actively enrolled at any given point of time. All other applicants who are eligible will be placed on a waiting list till there is an opening. There seem to be a higher list of those who don't qualify then who do for this high-risk benefit that costs an arm and a leg anyway.

How To Get A Good Home Loan

Predatory loans

The term predatory loan refers to a variety of abusive lending practices. Predatory lenders use high-pressure sales tactics. They only offer you high interest loans with lots of junk fees tacked on, even though you may qualify for a better loan. High interest rates and unnecessary fees raise the amount you must borrow, and make it hard for you to make your monthly payments. This puts you at risk of losing your home and the money you have paid into it.

You won't know if a lender is legitimate or predatory until you shop around and get quotes from several lenders. If you are buying a home, or simply refinancing your current loan, it's important to compare different loans and the cost of each. Even if you have good credit, you can fall victim to predatory lenders. Protect yourself by shopping for loans at different banks, credit unions and other lenders.

Predatory lending tactics

Predatory lenders:

Don't tell you about lower rate loans you may qualify for.

Add unnecessary fees, commonly called "junk fees" to pad their profit.

Encourage you to repeatedly refinance. This allows them to collect more loan fees from you.

How to get a good home loan

Predatory lenders prey on people who don't know how good a loan they qualify for. You can protect yourself by doing the following:

Get a copy of your free credit report and FICO score. The higher your FICO score, the better the loan you can get. You can use this calculator to find out the interest rate you qualify for. If your FICO score is low, you can learn how to improve your score.

Shop for a loan like you would any other major purchase. You won't know how good a loan you can get until you have several quotes. Contact three or more lenders and compare the interest rate, points and fees.

Compare the quotes you've gotten from different lenders. Look at the loan terms and fees. It should be easy to tell which ones are "predatory." Choose the best loan with the lowest interest rate and fees.

Sub-prime loans

If you don't have good credit, lenders consider you a high-risk borrower. The higher the risk you are, the higher the interest rate you will be asked to pay. They are not going to offer you the best loans with the lowest rates. However, you may qualify for a sub-prime loan. A sub-prime loan has a higher interest rate and fees than prime loans that are offered to homeowners with a good Credit rating. You should think of high interest sub-prime loans as being short-term. When your Credit rating improves, you can and should apply for a better loan.

Recognizing sub-prime loans

Sub-prime loans have:

High interest rates and fees.

Monthly payments that may only cover the interest and do not reduce the principal balance.

Balloon payments that have a large payment due in one lump sum at the end of the loan.

Adjustable interest rates that can increase the amount of your monthly payment.

Prepayment penalties if you pay off the loan early, even if it's to refinance the loan for better terms.

Negotiate loan costs and fees

Most banks, credit unions, and loan brokers charge points and fees to get you a loan. There are no set fees and charges. Loan charges are negotiable and will vary from lender to lender. You should negotiate the amount of these charges as you would any other major purchase.

Before you sign

Everything you were promised should be in writing on the loan documents. If you do not understand something, do not sign. Ask for an explanation. Review the loan documents carefully.

The Truth in Lending Disclosure has the basic terms and conditions of the loan. Make sure it lists the interest rate and monthly payments you were promised.

The Settlement or Closing Statement shows the fees you are being charged for the loan. You can question the fees and ask that they be reduced or removed.
